educañada
EduCañada is an advocacy campaign for Cañada Real, an informal settlement located on the outskirts of Madrid, that has been without electricity since 2020. The project aims to shed light on the major educational inequalities faced by the children of the region and how these inequalities only perpetuate their social inclusion. We want to advocate for change and for the rights of the children of Cañada Real, who the rest of Madrid has ignored. We want to raise awareness among government authorities, local organizations, and society about the educational difficulties these children face exacerbated by this infringement of human rights. By sharing their stories and proposing practical solutions, we aim to amplify their voices and hopefully create opportunities for brighter futures.
challenge
The project required analyzing and understanding the needs of children in Cañada Real, a marginalized community with limited access to education, while also navigating a context where information was scarce, poorly documented, and primarily available in Spanish, a language foreign to my own. This lack of visibility made it difficult to raise awareness and mobilize action, requiring an innovative approach to problem-solving
Process
Using Design Thinking as a methodology, we identified key barriers, validated insights through primary and secondary research, and developed a digital advocacy platform to amplify the voices of the affected community.
We began by conducting extensive secondary research, analyzing reports from NGOs, activist groups, and local media to understand the systemic challenges children in the settlement face. However, given the scarcity of documentation and language barriers, we supplemented this with primary research—conducting interviews with activists, educators, and residents to gain firsthand insights.
By leveraging digital storytelling and partnerships with activists and organizations, the campaign seeks to bridge this gap and push for concrete solutions that improve educational access and long-term opportunities for these children.
